Modern slavery statement
Our voluntary annual statement on the steps we take to keep modern slavery out of our operations and supply chain.
Why we publish this
The Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires certain businesses to publish an annual statement setting out the steps they take to ensure slavery and human trafficking are not present in their operations or supply chains. J & M McEwen falls below the statutory revenue threshold, but we publish a voluntary statement because we believe it is the right thing to do.
Our business
We are an independent furniture and homeware retailer based at 76 Junction Rd, Kirkwall, Orkney Islands KW15 1AR, United Kingdom. We buy from a mix of UK-based wholesalers, European manufacturers, and a small number of imported lines (mainly textiles and lighting).
Our policies
We expect every supplier we work with to comply with the Modern Slavery Act, the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code, and equivalent local labour law. New supplier agreements include a clause confirming this and the right for us to audit if a credible concern is raised.
Risk assessment
The majority of our spend is with established UK and EU manufacturers who themselves publish modern-slavery statements, which we review annually. Higher-risk categories — imported textiles and certain timber products — receive additional due diligence.
Training
Buying staff and the showroom manager receive an annual briefing covering the signs of labour exploitation in our supply chain and how to escalate a concern.
Reporting concerns
If you have a concern relating to modern slavery in our operations or supply chain, please email enquiries@jandmmcewen.co.uk. We treat such reports confidentially. You can also report to the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.
