Leather vs fabric

Leather vs fabric

An honest comparison — not a verdict. Both materials suit different households, and we'll help you pick what fits yours.

The honest answer: both are right, in different rooms

Leather is not automatically better. Fabric is not automatically softer or cheaper. Which suits depends on how the sofa will be used.

Leather

Pro Con
Wipes clean — spills bead and lift Cold in winter, sticky in summer
Develops a patina that improves with age Initial cost typically 30–60% higher
Resists pet hair, odours, dust mites Pet claws scratch (especially aniline)
Decades of useful life Damage repair is specialist

Leather grades

Grade What it is Behaviour
Aniline Full-grain, dyed all the way through Most natural look, marks easily, ages beautifully
Semi-aniline Aniline + light protective coat Good balance of natural look and durability
Pigmented (protected) Surface coloured + sealed Most hard-wearing, most uniform, least natural
Bonded leather Reconstituted leather fibres on a backing Avoid — peels within 5–10 years

Fabric

Pro Con
Warmer to sit on year-round Absorbs spills, smells, pet hair
Huge colour and texture range Replace covers, not the frame, every 8–12 years
Lower initial cost Loose-weave fabrics snag with cat claws
Removable covers can be washed (some) Sun-bleaching on uncovered windows

Fabric construction

Fabric Feel Care
Velvet Luxurious, marks easily Brush regularly, avoid pets
Chenille Soft, hard-wearing Vacuum weekly
Linen Cool, casual, creases naturally Loose-weave — not for pet households
Performance polyester Stain-resistant, tight weave Best for families
Bouclé Sculptural, very on-trend Avoid pets and small children

Our recommendations

  • Family with young children, fabric: performance polyester or chenille, dark or pattern.
  • Family with young children, leather: pigmented, mid-tone.
  • Pet household: pigmented leather or tightly-woven performance fabric.
  • Adult-only living room, premium feel: aniline or semi-aniline leather, or velvet.
  • Holiday let: performance polyester, mid-tone, contract-rated.

The compromise

If you cannot pick, consider a fabric sofa with leather scatter cushions on a leather chair, or vice versa — you get the best of both materials in the same room.
